Missouri WIC Food List
Missouri WIC food benefits are loaded onto your WIC card and accepted at authorized grocery stores and pharmacies statewide. Your specific monthly food package depends on your participant category โ pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum, infant, or child โ and is determined at certification based on a nutritionist's assessment. Missouri WIC nutritionists can also tailor food packages for individual needs.
Food Categories for Women and Children
- Dairy: Milk (whole, reduced-fat, low-fat, or fat-free), soy milk, cheese, buttermilk, and lactose-free milk.
- Eggs: White eggs, large or medium, grade A or AA (cage-free allowed).
- Whole grains: Cold and hot iron-fortified cereal, 100% whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat and corn tortillas, and whole wheat pasta. Missouri's inclusion of both tortilla varieties alongside multiple grain options gives participants more variety than many state packages.
- Fruits and vegetables: Fresh and frozen produce using a monthly cash value benefit (CVB) loaded on your WIC card. The specific benefit amount for your category is shown on your WIC shopping list.
- Legumes: Dried beans, peas, and lentils, plus canned beans. Mature legumes only โ immature varieties such as green beans and snap beans are not eligible.
- Peanut butter: Creamy or chunky, regular or reduced fat.
- Tofu: Available as a protein alternative in several approved varieties (firm, extra firm, soft, and silken) from authorized brands.
- Juice: 100% fruit or vegetable juice, vitamin C-enriched, unsweetened only.
- Canned fish: Light tuna (water-packed) and sardines are available in the food packages for women who are fully breastfeeding.
Infant Food Packages
- Formula-fed or partially breastfed infants: Receive iron-fortified infant formula. Starting at six months, they also receive infant cereal and jarred baby food fruits and vegetables.
- Fully breastfed infants: At six months, fully breastfed infants receive infant cereal, jarred baby food fruits and vegetables, and infant meat. Missouri WIC specifically highlights infant meat as a benefit for exclusively breastfed babies โ an additional protein source that formula-fed infants, who get more formula, do not receive.
- Special formulas: Available with a physician's prescription for infants with documented medical needs.
WICShopper App
Missouri WIC participants can download the free WICShopper app (search for "WICShopper" by JPMA, Inc. on the App Store or Google Play). When setting up the app, select Missouri as your state and enter your WIC card number. The app lets you scan product barcodes in the store aisle to instantly check whether an item is covered, view your current benefit balance by food category, find authorized store locations, and set benefit expiration notifications.
Missouri WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program
Missouri WIC offers a Farmers' Market Nutrition Program providing seasonal benefits that can be exchanged for fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs at authorized farmers' markets and roadside stands. The program is available to eligible WIC participants in participating counties during summer and fall months. Contact your local WIC agency to confirm availability in your area and the current benefit amount for the season.
