Kansas WIC is administered by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Nutrition and WIC Services and serves tens of thousands of Kansas residents across all 102 counties. Kansas WIC benefits are accepted at hundreds of authorized grocery stores statewide. To find your local WIC clinic or get started on an application, visit the KDHE WIC For Families page.
Kansas WIC emphasizes that many working people qualify for WIC without realizing it. The program is open to Kansas residents who are pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum, or caring for children under age five — regardless of employment status — as long as they meet income guidelines and have a medical or nutritional need.
Online Pre-Application Tool
Kansas WIC offers an online WIC Pre-application tool to get started on applying for WIC services. Visit the Kansas WIC Pre-Application Portal to submit your information online. After submitting, a local WIC agency will contact you to set up a certification appointment. Important note for transfers: If you are transferring to Kansas WIC from another state, do not use the online pre-application. Instead, call your local WIC office directly so staff can connect you with the correct local agency and process your Verification of Certification (VOC) transfer.
KanCare — Kansas's Medicaid Name
Kansas uses the name KanCare for its Medicaid program — a managed care system delivered through three health plans: Healthy Blue Kansas, Sunflower State Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kansas. If your household participates in KanCare (Medicaid), you are automatically income-eligible for WIC. A KanCare card is also listed as an accepted form of proof of identity for children applying for WIC. Knowing the KanCare name matters when gathering documents for your appointment.
Breastfeeding Peer Counselors
Many Kansas WIC clinics have a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor — a WIC mother who has successfully breastfed her own child and received specialized training to support other mothers. Kansas WIC specifically highlights that in most clinics, peer counselors are available both inside and outside usual clinic hours and the WIC clinic environment, meaning breastfeeding support is not limited to your scheduled appointments. Some clinics also have International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) available for more complex breastfeeding needs.
Immunization Screening and Referral
Kansas WIC includes immunization screening and referral as a standard service alongside nutrition education and food benefits. At WIC appointments, staff screen children's immunization records and provide referrals to vaccination services when needed — an integration of public health services that goes beyond what WIC provides in many other states.
Tribal WIC and FDPIR in Kansas
Kansas has four federally recognized tribal nations: the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska. Tribal members who meet WIC eligibility criteria are served through the Kansas WIC program administered by KDHE — contact your local county health department WIC clinic to enroll.
Some tribal members may also be eligible for the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), which provides USDA commodity foods as an alternative to SNAP. Participating in FDPIR does not prevent enrollment in WIC — the two programs can be used together. Contact your tribal office or the USDA Food and Nutrition Service for FDPIR eligibility information.

Frequently Asked Questions — Kansas WIC
For a household of four in Kansas, the WIC income limit is $59,478 per year, or $4,957 per month, based on 185% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026). Kansas counts an unborn child as a household member, so a pregnant woman applies as a household of at least two. If your household already participates in KanCare (Medicaid), SNAP, or TANF through DCF, you are automatically income-eligible for WIC regardless of your household income level.
KanCare is Kansas's managed care Medicaid program, delivered through three health plans: Healthy Blue Kansas, Sunflower State Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kansas. Partially. Kansas WIC offers an online Pre-application tool at the Kansas WIC Pre-Application Portal where you submit your information and a local WIC agency will contact you to schedule a certification appointment. Yes. Kansas WIC specifically notes that many WIC clinics have Breastfeeding Peer Counselors available both inside and outside usual clinic hours and the WIC clinic environment. Peer counselors are WIC mothers who have breastfed their own children and received specialized training to support other mothers with personalized guidance and encouragement. Some clinics also have International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) for more complex situations.
Yes. Kansas WIC includes immunization screening and referral as a standard part of its services. At WIC appointments, staff review children's immunization records and provide referrals to vaccination services when records show a child is due for vaccines. This is listed on the KDHE WIC website alongside nutrition education and food benefits as a core component of the Kansas WIC program.
If your household participates in KanCare (Medicaid), SNAP (food stamps), or TANF (cash assistance through the Kansas Department for Children and Families), you are automatically income-eligible for WIC — no separate income verification is required. Bring your current KanCare card, SNAP approval letter, or DCF benefit letter to your certification appointment as proof. You will still need to meet the other WIC eligibility requirements: Kansas residency, identity documentation, and a medical or nutritional need determined at your appointment.

Pregnant Women Count as Two
If you are pregnant, Kansas WIC counts you as two household members — yourself and the unborn child. If expecting multiples, count each additional baby separately. This increases your household size for income purposes and can shift smaller households into a more favorable income tier.
Automatic Income Eligibility — Kansas's Program Names
If your household participates in any of the following programs, you are automatically income-eligible for WIC — no separate income documentation is required:
- KanCare (Medicaid) — Kansas's managed care Medicaid program, delivered through Healthy Blue Kansas, Sunflower State Health Plan, or UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kansas. A current KanCare Medicaid card satisfies both income and identity requirements for WIC.
- SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program / food stamps) — administered by the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF).
- TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) — administered by the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF). A current DCF benefit letter serves as proof of adjunctive eligibility.
Bring your current KanCare card, SNAP approval letter, or DCF benefit letter to your WIC appointment. That documentation replaces income proof entirely.
Income Documentation if Not Auto-Eligible
If your household does not participate in KanCare, SNAP, or TANF, bring proof of household income within the last 30 days for all people living in the home — pay stubs, or income tax records for self-employed individuals. Kansas WIC uses gross income before any deductions.
Kansas WIC does not ask about citizenship or immigration status. Receiving WIC benefits will not affect immigration status.
