About the Hawaii WIC Program

Hawaii WIC is administered by the Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH), WIC Services Branch, but delivered locally through 15 local agencies operating 28 clinics across Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Hawaii Island, and Kauai — many of them community health centers already serving their neighborhoods. The program provides free nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and referrals to health care and social services for pregnant women, new parents, infants, and children up to age 5.

Who WIC Serves in Hawaii

WIC is open to pregnant women, women up to six months after giving birth (or up to a year if breastfeeding), infants, and children up to their 5th birthday. Fathers, foster parents, grandparents, and other guardians can apply on behalf of an eligible child. To qualify, a household needs to meet income guidelines and show a nutrition-related risk — like being underweight, anemic, or newly pregnant — which a WIC staff member or your doctor can help confirm at your appointment. Hawaii WIC does not require U.S. citizenship, and applying does not require providing immigration status information for the person applying for benefits.

What Your Benefits Include

Once approved, you get an eWIC card loaded monthly with funds for specific foods like milk, eggs, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and infant formula. The card works like a debit card at authorized grocery stores statewide. Most participants use the free WICShopper app to check their benefit balance, confirm an item is approved before they buy it, and find authorized stores. WIC also connects families to breastfeeding support — including a Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program — nutrition education, and referrals to other services like Med-QUEST or SNAP.

How WIC Works Across the Islands

Because Hawaii WIC is delivered through 15 local agencies rather than a single state office, the fastest way to get started is to submit the online pre-application at hiwic.org/apply or call the WIC clinic nearest you directly. A staff member at your local agency will follow up to schedule your certification appointment. Clinic capacity and appointment availability can vary more on neighbor islands — Molokai and Lanai, for example, are each served by a single small clinic — so it's worth calling ahead, especially if you're near a certification deadline.

Staying Enrolled

Recertification timing depends on your category: pregnant participants are certified through delivery, breastfeeding participants up to a year postpartum, non-breastfeeding postpartum participants for six months, and children annually. Your local WIC agency will notify you before your certification period ends — don't wait until the last week to schedule, particularly at smaller neighbor-island clinics with limited appointment slots.

Hawaii WIC Questions

Who is eligible for WIC in Hawaii?

Pregnant women, women up to six months postpartum (or up to a year if breastfeeding), infants, and children up to age 5 may qualify, based on income and a nutrition-related risk factor confirmed at your appointment.

Can I get WIC automatically if I already receive Med-QUEST, SNAP, or TANF?

Yes. Participating in Med-QUEST (Hawaii's Medicaid program), SNAP, or TANF automatically meets WIC's income eligibility requirement — bring proof of that enrollment to your appointment instead of pay stubs.

How long do WIC benefits last before I have to recertify?

Recertification timing depends on your category: pregnant participants are certified through delivery, breastfeeding participants up to a year postpartum, non-breastfeeding postpartum participants for six months, and children annually.

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to get WIC in Hawaii?

No. Hawaii WIC does not have a citizenship requirement, and applying does not require providing immigration status information for the person applying for benefits.

How do I use my Hawaii WIC benefits?

Approved foods are purchased with your eWIC card at authorized grocery stores statewide. You can check your balance and confirm approved items with the free WICShopper app, or call eWIC customer service at 1-888-347-5449.

Is there a WIC app for Hawaii?

Yes. Hawaii WIC directs participants to the free WICShopper app to check their eWIC balance before shopping, scan items to confirm they are approved, and find authorized stores.
