Texas WIC Program

Texas WIC is administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) through local agencies and clinic sites across all 254 counties — more counties than any other state. The program serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women, postpartum women, infants, and children under 5, providing food benefits, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support.

Who WIC Serves in Texas

WIC is open to pregnant women, women up to six months after giving birth (or up to a year if breastfeeding), infants, and children up to their 5th birthday. Fathers, foster parents, grandparents, and legal guardians can all apply on behalf of an eligible child. Eligibility is based on income and a nutrition-related risk, such as a medical or diet-related concern a health provider or WIC staff member can identify at your appointment.

What Your Benefits Include

Approved participants receive monthly funds on a Texas WIC card for foods like milk, eggs, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and infant formula — the card works like a debit card at thousands of authorized stores statewide, including H-E-B, Walmart, and Kroger. Texas WIC also provides breastfeeding support through lactation consultants and peer counselors, nutrition education, and referrals to other health and social services. Many clinics offer evening and Saturday hours for working parents.

If your household already receives Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, you automatically meet the income requirement for WIC, which can speed up processing.
