Alabama WIC Program

Alabama WIC is administered by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) but delivered locally through county health department WIC clinics in all 67 Alabama counties, plus a state-run clinic serving the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Escambia County. There's no single statewide WIC office to visit — your nearest county health department is your local WIC agency.

Who WIC Serves in Alabama

WIC is open to women who are pregnant, postpartum up to six months after delivery (up to a year if breastfeeding), infants, and children up to their 5th birthday. Fathers, grandparents, foster parents, and other caretakers can apply on behalf of an eligible child. To qualify, a household needs to meet income guidelines and have a nutrition-related risk — such as being pregnant, underweight, or anemic — which a WIC health professional confirms at your appointment. Alabama does not ask about immigration or citizenship status, and applying does not affect public charge determinations.

What Your Benefits Include

Approved food benefits are loaded monthly onto an eWIC card that works like a debit card at authorized grocery stores statewide, covering items like milk, eggs, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, tofu, canned fish, and infant formula. WIC also connects families to breastfeeding support, one-on-one nutrition counseling, and referrals to programs like Medicaid or SNAP. Most participants use the free WIC Shopper app to scan barcodes and confirm an item is approved, check their benefit balance, find nearby WIC-authorized stores, and set reminders for appointments and benefit expiration dates.

How WIC Works in Alabama

Alabama does not have a statewide online WIC application. To get started, call your local county health department or the statewide WIC line at 1-888-942-4673 (1-888-WIC-HOPE) to schedule a certification appointment. One notable exception: if you were already enrolled in WIC while pregnant, you can enroll your newborn remotely by emailing a form and proof documents to your local clinic instead of coming in — the form is available on the ADPH WIC apply page. Mobile County and Jefferson County run their own local scheduling procedures, so participants there should contact their county WIC clinic directly.

Staying Enrolled

Recertification timing depends on your category: pregnant participants are certified through pregnancy and six months postpartum (twelve months if breastfeeding), infants are recertified around six months and again near their first birthday, and children are recertified every six to twelve months until age five. Your county health department will let you know before your certification period ends — each monthly benefit period also has its own expiration date, and unused benefits do not roll over, so it pays to renew early.
