How to Apply for WIC in Kansas

Kansas WIC is delivered through local agencies — mostly county health departments — rather than a single state office, so applying starts with the online Pre-Application Portal or a call to your local clinic.

Step 1: Start Your Pre-Application

Visit the Kansas WIC Pre-Application Portal to submit your information online. A local WIC agency will contact you to schedule your certification appointment. If you're transferring to Kansas WIC from another state, do not use the online pre-application — call your local WIC office directly instead, so staff can connect you with the correct local agency and process your Verification of Certification (VOC) transfer. Step 2: Gather Your Documents

• Proof of identity — birth certificate, driver's license, KS Medicaid (KanCare) card, military ID, passport, photo ID, or school ID
• Proof of identity for each child applying — birth certificate, foster care/adoption papers, KS Medicaid card, or shot/immunization records
• Proof of Kansas residency — a mailed envelope, official letter, rent receipt, or utility bill showing your current address
• Proof of household income — recent paycheck stubs, income tax records for self-employment, or your Medicaid Title XIX (KanCare) card if you're automatically eligible

Step 3: Your Certification Appointment

At your appointment, a WIC health professional verifies your documents and reviews the foods you eat, your medical history, and current health status to determine medical or nutritional need. If eligible, you'll receive your eWIC card and first set of food benefits, along with nutrition education and information about breastfeeding support and the WICShopper app. Kansas WIC also offers immunization screening and referral at appointments — staff review children's immunization records and provide referrals to vaccination services when needed.

Recertification

Pregnant participants are certified through pregnancy and six months postpartum (twelve months if breastfeeding). Infants are recertified around six months and again near their first birthday. Children are recertified every six months until their fifth birthday. Moving To or From Kansas
