Minnesota WIC Approved Foods
Updated August 2026
Once you're approved for Minnesota WIC, your benefits are loaded monthly onto a WIC card that works like a debit card at authorized stores. Here's what's covered, how to check whether a specific brand or item is approved, and how the cash-value benefit for fruits and vegetables works.
Approved WIC Foods in Minnesota
Minnesota WIC food benefits are loaded onto an eWIC card and accepted at WIC-authorized grocery stores statewide. Your specific monthly food package depends on your participant category — pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum, infant, or child — and is set at your certification appointment. Use the free Minnesota WIC App to scan a product's barcode and instantly confirm whether it's approved, find nearby authorized stores, and check your benefit balance.
Food Categories
- Dairy: Low-fat milk, cheese, and lactose-free options, plus soy-based beverages for eligible participants
- Eggs: Any color from domestic hens
- Whole grains: Iron-fortified cereal, whole grain bread and tortillas, brown rice, and oatmeal
- Legumes: Dried and canned beans, peas, and lentils
- Peanut butter: Creamy or chunky, any brand
- Canned fish: Tuna and salmon for eligible participant categories
- Juice: 100% fruit or vegetable juice, unsweetened only
- Infant foods: Iron-fortified infant cereal, jarred baby food, and WIC-approved infant formula; special medical formulas require documentation from a healthcare provider
Your shopping list, issued at your appointment, shows exactly which items and amounts are approved for your household — check the Minnesota WIC App if you're ever unsure whether something is on your current list.
Your Monthly Fruit and Vegetable Benefit
Every participant receives a monthly Cash Value Benefit (CVB) to spend on fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables without added sugar, salt, or sauces: $26 a month for children, $48 for pregnant or postpartum participants, and $52 for breastfeeding participants. This benefit can be used at WIC-authorized grocery stores and, in many areas, at participating farmers' markets. It does not roll over month to month, so use it before your benefit period ends.
Farmers' Market Benefits
Minnesota's WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), run in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, gives eligible participants coupons — separate from the regular monthly CVB — to buy fresh, locally grown produce directly from authorized farmers and farmers' markets. Ask your local WIC agency whether FMNP coupons are available in your area.
Shopping Tips
Use the Minnesota WIC App to scan barcodes before you buy, and look for WIC shelf tags at participating stores. You must set a PIN before shopping with your WIC card for the first time — call 833-566-5248 to set your PIN or report a card lost, stolen, or damaged.
