South Dakota WIC Approved Foods

Updated August 2026

Once you're approved for South Dakota WIC, your benefits are loaded monthly onto a WIC card that works like a debit card at authorized stores. Here's what's covered, how to check whether a specific brand or item is approved, and how the cash-value benefit for fruits and vegetables works.

Approved WIC Foods in South Dakota

South Dakota WIC food benefits are loaded monthly onto a WIC card redeemable at authorized stores statewide, including Hy-Vee and regional and independent grocers. Every food is individually reviewed by registered dietitians to ensure it meets nutrition standards for calcium, iron, and fiber. The free South Dakota WIC app helps participants check their benefit balance, scan items to confirm they're approved, and find nearby stores.

What's Included

  • Fresh, frozen, and canned fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains — bread, tortillas, brown rice and other grains, and pasta
  • Dairy — milk, cheese, yogurt, and soy beverages
  • Hot and cold approved cereals
  • 100% juice
  • Eggs and plant proteins — beans, peas, lentils, peanut butter, and tofu
  • Canned fish — tuna, salmon, and sardines
  • Infant foods — formula, infant cereal, infant fruits and vegetables, and infant meats

All participants also receive a monthly Cash Value Benefit (CVB) for fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables without added sugars, fats, or oils: $26 a month for children, $48 for pregnant or postpartum participants, and $52 for breastfeeding participants. Use the WIC app or the printable Food Guide to confirm exactly which items and brands are covered.

Online Grocery Shopping

South Dakota WIC participants can shop online and pick up or have groceries delivered at select stores, including Hy-Vee and Buche Foods. Pickup is free with no minimum order, WIC and non-WIC items can be purchased in the same order, and your WIC card is charged first with any remaining balance covered by SNAP or another payment method. The state is continuing to add more online shopping locations.

Shopping Tips

Use the South Dakota WIC app to scan barcodes at the store and instantly check whether a product is approved before you get to checkout. Choose the least expensive option among approved items so benefits stretch further for all WIC families. Your Cash Value Benefit does not roll over month to month, so use it before your benefit period ends. If you run into a shopping issue, contact your local WIC office or use the online issue-report form.
