New Jersey WIC Approved Foods
Updated September 2026
Once you're approved for New Jersey WIC, your benefits are loaded monthly onto a WIC card that works like a debit card at authorized stores. Here's what's covered, how to check whether a specific brand or item is approved, and how the cash-value benefit for fruits and vegetables works.
Quick Answer
New Jersey WIC covers the same national food categories as every state — milk, eggs, cereal, whole grains, fruits and vegetables (via a cash-value benefit), juice, beans, and infant formula — but the specific approved brands, sizes, and quantities are set by the New Jersey Department of Health. See the full New Jersey list below.
Approved WIC Foods in New Jersey
New Jersey WIC food benefits are loaded monthly onto an eWIC card redeemable at authorized grocery stores statewide. Use the free WIC Shopper app to scan UPC barcodes and confirm items are approved before you check out. Your WIC shopping list, issued at your appointment, shows exactly which items and amounts are approved for your household.
Fruits and Vegetables
Every participant receives a monthly Cash Value Benefit (CVB) for fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables. For the current benefit year, the monthly CVB is $26 for children, $48 for pregnant or postpartum participants, and $52 for breastfeeding participants. Fresh, frozen, and canned produce without added sugar, salt, or sauces all qualify — organic is allowed for fresh and canned produce. Benefits do not roll over month to month, so use them before the end of each benefit period.
Milk, Cheese, and Plant-Based Options
Fluid milk must be store brand, with one notable exception: Kosher fluid milk is approved in any brand, reflecting New Jersey's large observant Jewish community. Lactose-reduced and lactose-free milk are approved in any brand. Cheese must be U.S.-made from pasteurized cow's milk in approved varieties like cheddar, mozzarella, and American. If your benefits include a plant-based beverage, New Jersey approves specific soy and pea-protein brands rather than any brand of almond, oat, or coconut milk — check your shopping list for approved options.
Yogurt, Eggs, and Whole Grains
New Jersey's approved yogurt list includes several national and Kosher-certified brands in 32 oz. containers or 4 oz. packs — note that Greek yogurt is not an approved WIC item in New Jersey. Eggs must be Grade A large, white-shell eggs; organic and cage-free eggs are not approved. Whole grain options include 100% whole wheat bread and pasta, corn or whole wheat tortillas, brown or wild rice, and quinoa, with specific approved brands and sizes listed on your shopping list.
Farmers' Market Benefits
Eligible participants also receive seasonal benefits through the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), co-administered with the NJ Department of Agriculture, to buy fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs directly from certified New Jersey farmers at farmers' markets and roadside stands. Ask your local WIC agency whether FMNP benefits are available in your area.
Shopping Tips for New Jersey WIC
Use the WIC Shopper app to scan barcodes at the store and instantly check whether a product is approved. If an item won't scan as approved at checkout, check it against your current shopping list or contact your local WIC agency before completing the purchase — approved brands and sizes can change as the program updates its product list.
