Rhode Island WIC Approved Foods
Updated August 2026
Once you're approved for Rhode Island WIC, your benefits are loaded monthly onto a WIC card that works like a debit card at authorized stores. Here's what's covered, how to check whether a specific brand or item is approved, and how the cash-value benefit for fruits and vegetables works.
Approved WIC Foods in Rhode Island
Rhode Island WIC food benefits load monthly onto an eWIC card, redeemable at authorized grocery stores statewide. The free, ad-free WIC Shopper App lets you scan barcodes to confirm an item is approved, check your real-time balance, and find nearby WIC-authorized stores. Rhode Island's WIC Food Guide is available in English and Spanish — ask your clinic for a copy or download it at health.ri.gov.
Cash Value Benefit for Fruits and Vegetables
Every participant receives a monthly Cash Value Benefit (CVB) to buy fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables at authorized stores — currently $26 a month for children, $48 for pregnant or postpartum participants, and $52 for breastfeeding participants. Fresh herbs are also an approved item under the CVB. Benefits don't roll over, so use them before the end of each monthly period.
Farmers' Market Nutrition Program
In addition to the CVB, eligible participants receive seasonal Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) benefits — $30 for the 2026 season — for fresh, locally grown produce at authorized Rhode Island farmers' markets, redeemable June through October. Ask your WIC clinic for your FMNP benefit card when the program opens each spring.
Other Approved Foods
Beyond produce, your WIC Shopping List covers foods like milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, whole grains (bread, tortillas, brown rice, and cereal), beans and peanut butter, 100% juice, and infant formula and baby food. Breastfeeding participants also receive an enhanced food package that can include canned fish. Exact brands, sizes, and quantities are shown on your personalized WIC Shopping List and can change with periodic food package updates, so check the WIC Shopper App before you shop.
Shopping Tips
Scan barcodes with the WIC Shopper App at the store to confirm an item is approved before you get to checkout. Keep your eWIC card away from magnets, cell phones, and heat, since it's reusable across benefit periods. If an item you've bought before no longer scans as approved, check your current WIC Shopping List or ask your clinic — food packages are updated periodically to reflect current nutrition guidance.
