Rhode Island WIC is overseen by the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH), but — despite RIDOH being the state's only public health agency, with no county health departments in between — WIC clinics themselves are run locally, through community health centers, hospitals, and community action agencies under contract with the state.

Who WIC Serves in Rhode Island

WIC is open to people who are pregnant, postpartum for up to six months (regardless of birth outcome), breastfeeding for up to a year, infants, and children up to their 5th birthday. Any parent, foster parent, or guardian of an eligible child can apply on their behalf. To qualify, a household needs to meet income guidelines and have a nutrition-related risk — like being pregnant, anemic, or underweight — which WIC staff confirm at your first appointment. Rhode Island WIC does not ask about immigration or citizenship status, and participation is not considered in public charge determinations.

Once approved, benefits load monthly onto an eWIC card that works like a debit card at authorized grocery stores statewide, covering foods like milk, eggs, cheese, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and infant formula. WIC also provides one-on-one nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support and free breast pumps when medically needed, and referrals to other health and social services. Staying Enrolled

Recertification timing depends on your category: pregnant participants are certified through delivery, breastfeeding participants for up to a year postpartum, non-breastfeeding postpartum participants for six months, and children with periodic recertification through age five. Your local WIC clinic will let you know when it's time to come back in — since hours vary by agency, it's worth scheduling your recertification appointment as soon as you're notified.
