How to Apply for WIC in Vermont

Vermont WIC offers three ways to start your application: online, by text message, or by contacting your local district health office. After your initial contact, local WIC staff guide you through the eligibility process, and appointments are available by phone, video, or in person.

Step 1: Start Your Application

• Online: Visit healthvermont.gov/family/wic/apply-wic and answer a few questions — local WIC staff will follow up.
• Text: Text APPLY to 1-844-TEXT-WIC (1-844-839-8942) from your mobile phone.
• Local office: Contact your nearest local district health office directly, or call the Vermont WIC Program at 800-464-4343.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

• Proof of identity for each person applying — driver's license, birth certificate, passport, or immunization records
• Proof of Vermont residency — utility bill, lease, or any document showing a Vermont address
• Proof of income for the last 30 days — pay stubs or an employer letter — not required if enrolled in Vermont Medicaid, Dr. Dynasaur, 3SquaresVT, or Reach Up; bring proof of that enrollment instead

Step 3: Attend Your Appointment

Your appointment takes about an hour, whether by phone, video, or in person. WIC staff verify income, identity, and residency, then complete a health and growth assessment including height and weight measurements and a hemoglobin check. You'll receive personalized nutrition education and a food prescription. Free interpretation services are available at every appointment.

Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card and Benefits

Staying Enrolled in Vermont

Recertification timing depends on your category — pregnant participants are certified through pregnancy and into the postpartum period, breastfeeding participants can remain eligible for up to a year postpartum, and children are recertified periodically between birth and age 5. Vermont WIC will contact you before your certification period ends to schedule your next appointment, which includes the same eligibility verification and health assessment as your first visit.
