Washington WIC Program

Washington WIC is administered by the Washington State Department of Health but delivered locally — through county health departments, community health centers, and tribal health programs — with more than 200 clinics reaching families from Seattle and Tacoma to the Olympic Peninsula, eastern Washington, and tribal communities across the state's 39 counties.

Who WIC Serves in Washington

WIC is open to people who are pregnant, up to six months postpartum (or up to a year if breastfeeding), infants, and children under age five. Dads, grandparents, foster parents, and other caregivers can apply on behalf of an eligible child under five. There's no citizenship requirement — Washington State DOH explicitly states that being on WIC does not make you a public charge and does not affect your immigration status. To qualify, a household needs to meet income guidelines and have a nutrition-related risk, such as being pregnant, anemic, or underweight, which WIC staff can help confirm at your appointment.

What Your Benefits Include

Once approved, benefits are loaded onto a Washington WIC Card that works like a debit card at authorized grocery stores and pharmacies statewide, covering foods like milk, eggs, cheese, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and infant formula. Participants who are fully breastfeeding receive extra foods to support milk production. WIC also connects families to breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and referrals to Apple Health, Basic Food, and other services. Many participants use the free WICShopper app to scan barcodes, check their benefit balance, and find nearby WIC-authorized stores, and can now place pickup or delivery orders with participating retailers through WIC Online Ordering.

A staff member will schedule your first appointment — about 30-45 minutes — which can be done by phone or in person, and most participants leave with food benefits loaded onto their card the same day.

Staying Enrolled

Certification periods vary by category: pregnant participants are certified through delivery, breastfeeding participants for up to a year postpartum, non-breastfeeding postpartum participants for six months, and children annually. Your local WIC clinic will notify you before recertification is due, and many follow-up and recertification appointments can be completed remotely by phone.
