How to Apply for WIC in Virginia

Virginia offers an online WIC application at myvawic.org. After you submit it, your local health district WIC office contacts you to schedule your certification appointment. You can also contact your local health district directly — use the health district map on the VDH website to find your office. Before Your Appointment

• ID for every family member applying — driver's license, passport, birth certificate, or other government-issued ID
• Proof of Virginia address — utility bill, lease, or recent mail with your name and address
• Proof of income — recent pay stubs or other income documentation. If your household receives Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, bring that enrollment documentation instead
• For infants and children — birth certificate or hospital record
• For pregnant applicants — documentation of pregnancy from a healthcare provider, if available

What Happens at Your Appointment

A WIC health professional reviews your documents, completes a free nutritional risk assessment, and determines your food package. If approved, benefits are loaded onto your Virginia eWIC card and you'll also receive nutrition education and breastfeeding support. Because Virginia WIC runs through local health districts, the exact appointment experience can vary somewhat by district.

Recertification in Virginia

Certification periods follow federal guidelines: pregnant participants are certified through delivery, breastfeeding participants for up to a year postpartum, non-breastfeeding postpartum participants for six months, and children annually. Your local health district office will notify you before your certification period ends.

Moving To or From Virginia

If you're moving to Virginia from another state, contact a local health district WIC office and bring the Verification of Certification (VOC) form from your previous state. If you're moving within Virginia, your local office can direct you to the WIC office in your new district. If you're leaving Virginia, ask your WIC office for a VOC form before you go so your new state can continue your benefits without starting over.
