How to Apply for WIC in West Virginia

West Virginia WIC offers both an online pre-application and clinic-based sign-up, but every applicant must complete an in-person certification appointment for the required health screening. Before Your Appointment

• Photo ID or proof of identity for every family member applying — driver's license, birth certificate, or hospital record
• Proof of West Virginia residency — utility bill, lease, or addressed mail
• Proof of income for the last 30 days — pay stubs or an employer letter. Not required if your household is enrolled in West Virginia Medicaid, SNAP, or WV WORKS; bring that enrollment documentation instead
• For pregnant applicants — documentation of pregnancy from a healthcare provider, if not visibly pregnant
• For foster children — documentation of foster care status

What Happens at Your Appointment

Plan on about an hour. A WIC health professional conducts a nutritional risk assessment, including height and weight measurements and a quick blood test to check iron levels, and reviews your diet and health history. If approved, you'll receive your eWIC card loaded with your first month of food benefits. Appointment hours vary by clinic, so contact your local office directly to ask about availability.

Recertification

Certification periods follow federal guidelines: pregnant participants are certified through delivery, breastfeeding participants for up to a year postpartum, non-breastfeeding postpartum participants for six months, and children annually. Your local clinic will contact you as your certification period nears its end — keeping your phone number and address current with them helps avoid a gap in benefits.

Moving To or From West Virginia

If you're moving to West Virginia from another state, contact a local WIC clinic and bring the Verification of Certification (VOC) form from your previous state so staff can continue your benefits without starting over. If you're leaving West Virginia, ask your clinic for a VOC form before you go. Your West Virginia eWIC card only works at authorized vendors within the state.
